about
The song was inspired by John Prine's talking blues "Jesus, the Missing years" It could almost be the sequel.
lyrics
I Believe that I can Believe
Well Jesus came back like he said he would
Took a look around, said “Oh this ain’t good”
He sayeth the Lord, “things ain’t too well,
from what I’ve seen Dad, you’d damn most of ‘em to hell”
God said “heck, I don’t know what to do,
that’s why I sent you back to try something new.
I’ve tried pestilence & plague & every kind of curse, but they never miss a beat
& they come back even worse”
Jesus said “Dad this place is a joke,
ain’t there some new miracle you could invoke?
Hey, I got an idea that just might float;
let’s resurrect Noah & build another boat?”
God said “Son, we gotta compromise.
Hell fire ain’t working & damning their eyes!”
I’ll let ‘em keep their temples & their artefacts,
& we’ll only smite the greedy & the egomaniacs.”
Jesus said “well Dad, you’re the boss,
but the last thing I want to see is a another cross!”
CH
I believe that you can believe what you wanna believe is true
And I believe, I can believe that too
Now, Mohammad & Buddha they came back too
So the prophets got together to see what they might do
You’d expect big things when Deities do lunch,
You’d reckon on a plan that packed a bit of punch
But the best they could muster was a big group hug
But they weren’t giving in & ordered up another jug
(of wine that is, the sacramental kind & they proceeded to drink a toast, to the salvation of all Mankind, Mohammed & Buddha abstaining of course)
Then Jesus said “boys what in hell went wrong, all we did was make some rules for the heathen throng?”
Mohammed said “I guess it got lost in translation.”
Buddha said “who threw religion into the equation?”
They decided something must be done & fast
& they all agreed catching up had been a blast
CH
So Jesus took off to touch base with the Lord
& find a better way to handle the horde
Buddha found a temple where he could sit & meditate
He did a lot of chanting & believing in fate
Mohammed grabbed his book & a few copies of it
& went among his people disguised as a prophet
(Well what they thought one looked like anyway)
Now my song might be just a silly fantasy,
but what if they were really living here among you & me
We, each & every one of us could take stock of our behaviour
Cos, one look at what their Daddy can do
You don’t wanna go pissin’ off the Saviour
